Already in September 2021, when sales numbers surpassed last year, it became clear that this would be another great year for vinyl records in the U.S. But the final results for 2021 excel all expectations.
According to the U.S. Year-End Report 2021 by MRC Data vinyl records sales exploded by 51.4 % to a total of $ 41.7 million. Alone in the week ending with December 23 over 2 million vinyl records were sold.
With that vinyl outgrew the physical album market which increased by 21.7% to $ 82.8 million. It also means that vinyl records accounted for more than half of the physical album sales, overtaking the stagnating CD segment ($ 40.6 million / +1.1 %).
An incredible success for vinyl records, a format that was considered doomed in 2011, when sales accounted for only 2 % of physical album sales.
The top five vinyl albums in 2021 were “30” by Adele, “Sour” by Olivia Rodrigo, “Red – Taylor’s Version” by Taylor Swift, “Fine Line” by Harry Styles and “Happier than Ever” by Billie Eilish.
